What is Sleep Dentistry?

Sleep dentistry is more commonly known as sedation or general anaesthesia dentistry. It is mainly used for patients with dental phobias, those with anxiety or those that have difficulty in staying in a dental chair or coping with dental treatment.

Who is this suitable for?

  • Patients dealing with dental anxiety or fears of dental procedures
  • Patients with bad dental experiences
  • Patients with general anxiety disorders
  • Patients with low pain tolerance
  • Patients with small mouths

If you feel that you fit into one of these categories and would like to learn more about sleep dentistry, the side effects and the costs, have a chat with one of our friendly dental team.

What Happens During General Anaesthesia

During general anaesthesia (GA), the patient is induced into a "sleep" phase during dental treatment. This helps to give our anxious patients peace of mind as general anaesthesia allows for minimal discomfort during the whole dental procedure.

General anaesthesia brings about an extreme state of calm to the patient, where the body's nervous system and pain receptors are fully relaxed. This can often lead to no recollection of the whole dental procedure when the patient wakes up.
