What Is A Dental Emergency?

There are a few things that may cause you to need an emergency dental appointment, all of them tend to be painful and it can be very stressful to experience them. If you are going through any sort of discomfort, don’t hesitate to come into our practice for an emergency appointment. Even if you haven’t booked, we can prioritise you if you are experiencing a dental emergency.

Man with toothache

ToothacheThis is one of the main reasons that people come into our practice, as the pain can become unbearable, and sometimes it doesn’t go away with normal painkillers, which is definitely a red flag. Toothache can mean that you have underlying issues with your teeth that you may not have known about.

Knocked out toothIf you have had an accident and your tooth has been knocked out, we would recommend that you come in for an emergency appointment to help avoid any further injury or infection.

Chipped/damaged toothWhen you get a breakage on your tooth, this can be uncomfortable, and there are a few things that our dentist can do to help, depending on your needs.

How Will We Treat Your Dental Emergency

It is important to see our dentist as soon as possible. If you leave it too long, the problem could get worse, and be more complex to treat.

ToothacheWhen you arrive we will first do what we can to relieve any pain and increase your comfort. After this, we will discuss your symptoms with you, examine your teeth, and maybe take some scans to get a better look at your teeth and jaw. Hopefully, by the end of the appointment, we will have found the cause, and we can create a treatment plan with you to ensure we can help you further.

Chipped/damaged toothIf you still have the piece of crown that has broken off, we may be able to glue it back onto your tooth, to help preserve your natural tooth. If this isn’t possible, we might provide you with an artificial crown, which is a cap that completely covers your broken tooth, and is made to look like normal enamel.

Knocked out toothWhen you arrive at our practice for a knocked out tooth, what we do to help you will vary depending on whether you managed to save the tooth. If your tooth isn’t too badly damaged, and you have brought it with you, our dentist will usually be able to clean it and put it back in for you using something called a splint. The splint will temporarily hold your tooth in place to encourage it to be stable and reattach better, and we will remove this after a couple of weeks.
