What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease (gum disease) is where the gums become infected with bacteria that build up in the mouth. The bacteria inflame the gums, causing them to bleed and to become swollen, red and tender. As the disease progresses it gradually destroys the gum tissue, causing the gums to begin pulling away from the teeth. This in turn causes pockets to begin developing around the base of the teeth, and these can quickly fill with bacteria. If not treated, this condition will destroy the ligaments and even the bone surrounding your teeth. Periodontal disease is the main cause of tooth loss in the world which is why we take it so seriously.

Periodontal Disease and its Links to Serious Health Conditions

There have been numerous studies conducted into the connection between periodontal disease and other serious health conditions including diabetes, arthritis, irritable bowel disease and heart disease. It isn’t quite clear how periodontal disease can affect general health, but scientists think it is due to the inflammatory nature of the disease which may increase the risk of developing other health conditions, or worsen existing health problems.

Treating Periodontal Disease

We offer various treatments for periodontal disease depending on the degree of infection. Prompt treatment can often halt this disease in its tracks, but if allowed to progress then the condition may become chronic. The aim is to remove bacteria causing the infection, enabling your gums to heal. Sometimes more complex treatments are necessary to help regenerate or replace tissues destroyed by periodontal disease. Treatment may be on-going as this condition can become chronic.

The early stages (gingivitis) can often be completely reversed through professional dental care combined with improved dental care at home. Scaling and polishing your teeth, or deep cleaning your gums can help remove infection, enabling healing. If you think you may have periodontal disease, please contact Blue House Dental as soon as possible for a professional diagnosis and customised treatment plan.
