Four Teeth-Healthy Breakfast Foods to Start the Day With a Smile

It’s known as the most important meal of the day - but when it comes to your choice of breakfast, are you starting off with the best foods for your oral health?

If you’re looking for some teeth-friendly foods to ensure you kick off your day in the healthiest way, check out these four breakfast foods that are good news for your dental health.

1. Wholegrain, low-sugar cereal

A bowl of cereal is a popular breakfast choice for adults and children alike. However, with some cereal varieties packed with sugar and artificial ingredients, it’s important to make smart choices about which cereals you buy.

We recommend choosing a wholegrain cereal that’s low in sugar, fat and sodium. Not only will this help to avoid the damaging effects of these ingredients on your teeth - which includes the development of tooth decay and cavities - it will also set you up for the day with slow-releasing energy that keeps you feeling fuller for longer.

2. Eggs

If a hot breakfast is what you’re after, eggs are a fantastic healthy choice. They’re high in protein, which is important for strengthening bones and muscles, as well as a host of important vitamins and minerals.

For an extra dose of dental health, add a sprinkle of cheese or whip up an omelette containing spinach, broccoli or capsicum - these vegetables are rich in vitamin C which helps to keep teeth and gums healthy and strong.

3. Fruit

Including firm fruits in your breakfast is a great way to up your nutrient intake while caring for your teeth. Crisp apples are high in fibre, while their crunchy texture and high water content help to increase the saliva in your mouth, keeping it hydrated.

Berries such as strawberries and blueberries are rich in antioxidants and nutrients, as well as being low in sugar - why not use them as a cereal topping or make a deliciously healthy berry smoothie?

4. Yoghurt

Yoghurt can be a healthy and convenient breakfast option, so long as you choose a yoghurt that’s low in sugar and artificial ingredients. Avoid flavoured yoghurts and instead opt for healthier plain varieties such as natural greek yoghurt.

As well as being high in protein, the calcium in yoghurt helps to keep your teeth and bones healthy and strong. What’s more, yoghurt contains phosphates which help to remineralise and strengthen teeth, making them a tooth-friendly brekkie option.
